SMU Education Abroad offers more than 150 programs around the world. No matter which education abroad program you choose, you’ll immerse yourself in the language, food, culture and day-to-day life of another country for an academic year or for the fall, spring, summer or January term.

All courses on faculty-led or hybrid programs have SMU specific course numbers and directly post to the SMU transcript.

Students are discouraged from studying abroad during their final full semester of study at SMU because SMU Abroad cannot guarantee that abroad credits will be processed in time for graduation in such cases.

How long is a university exchange?

The SMU exchange programs are open to students who: Are from any academic discipline and possess a GPA of 2.5* or higher. Have declared a major or are in the process of declaring a major prior to the start of the exchange program. Are eligible to receive transfer credit towards their SMU degree program (check with your academic advisor).

Do international students have to pay for smuiso?

*NB Students on exchange programmes/elective term are not required to pay these fees (Annual Membership Fee & Foreign levy). All international students registered with the Sefako Makgatho Health Science University regardless of discipline are automatically members of SMUISO.
