Can you study abroad at SMU?
SMU Education Abroad offers more than 150 programs around the world. No matter which education abroad program you choose, you’ll immerse yourself in the language, food, culture and day-to-day life of another country for an academic year or for the fall, spring, summer or January term.

SMU offers 150 study abroad programs in 50 different countries around the world, yet only about 23 percent of undergraduate students study abroad for a semester and 47 percent study abroad in the summer.
Is SMU Exchange compulsory?
SMU makes overseas experience compulsory for all new undergraduates. Students joining SMU from August will need overseas experience to graduate. This experience could include exchange programmes, internships, study missions, cultural exchanges and immersions, among other kinds of programmes.
Who is a secondary exchange student?
The secondary student exchange program in NSW is a state specific reciprocal program whereby students from another country are enrolled as full-time students in a NSW secondary school for a period ranging from three months (or one full school term) to one year.
How does someone become an exchange student?
The easiest way to to become a foreign exchange student is to use an exchange provider. An exchange provider can advise you on picking a destination, duration, and exchange type. Once you’ve booked your exchange, they’ll find you a host family and organize all the logistical details.
How will Abroad courses appear on my transcript SMU?
Grades earned abroad will be posted to the SMU transcript and will be calculated into the student’s cumulative and SMU GPA. Academic credit earned abroad counts as credit earned in residence. All courses on faculty-led or hybrid programs have SMU specific course numbers and directly post to the SMU transcript.
Why is it discouraged for seniors to study abroad during their final full semester at SMU?
Students are discouraged from studying abroad during their final full semester of study at SMU because SMU Abroad cannot guarantee that abroad credits will be processed in time for graduation in such cases.
How long is a university exchange?
An exchange student typically stays in the host country for a period of 6 to 12 months; however, exchange students may opt to stay for one semester at a time. International students or those on study abroad programs may stay in the host country for several years. Some exchange programs also offer academic credit.
What languages does SMU offer?
The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers courses in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. In addition to a diverse variety of course offerings the department offers a variety of internships and study abroad opportunities.
Where do exchange students live?
Exchange students live with a host family or in a designated place such as a hostel, an apartment, or a student lodging.
Who can participate in the SMU exchange program?
The SMU exchange programs are open to students who: Are from any academic discipline and possess a GPA of 2.5* or higher. Have declared a major or are in the process of declaring a major prior to the start of the exchange program. Are eligible to receive transfer credit towards their SMU degree program (check with your academic advisor).
Do international students have to pay for smuiso?
*NB Students on exchange programmes/elective term are not required to pay these fees (Annual Membership Fee & Foreign levy). All international students registered with the Sefako Makgatho Health Science University regardless of discipline are automatically members of SMUISO.
