The Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) replaced the Dean’s Letter and acts a direct evaluation of your medical school performance directly from your medical school. Unlike your other application documents, all MSPEs are held until applications are released to programs.

What is a Mspe?
The MSPE is a summary letter of evaluation intended to provide residency program directors an honest and objective summary of a student’s salient experiences, attributes, and academic performance.
Whats included in Mspe?
The MSPE document should be a maximum of seven single-spaced pages (excluding Medical School Information) with a 12-point font. The MSPE should contain six sections: Identifying Information, Noteworthy Characteristics, Academic History, Academic Progress, Summary, and Medical School Information.
Can you see your Mspe?
Do I get to look at my MSPE a second time to see if I missed anything? With our tight production deadline, it’s just not possible. When you do go over your MSPE prior to your meeting with a dean, you can see how everything will appear and make the appropriate changes.
Can you update Mspe?
When can the MSPE be changed? For current, non-re-applicant students and re-applicants who have graduated: After the MSPE is submitted in ERAS any additional information should be conveyed in an addendum.
How long does it take to process Mspe?
You can obtain your MSPE from your medical school and upload it via OASIS which will take up to five business days to process. If your medical school participates in EMSWP ERAS, the school will upload the document on your behalf which will take up to two business days to process.
How do I submit to Mspe?
There are two ways that your MSPE can be submitted:
- By you via ECFMG’s OASIS.
- By your medical school via EMSWP ERAS (if your medical school participates). See Document Submission for more information.
Do electives go on Mspe?
Can elective and M4 rotations be included in the MSPE? Yes, the MSPE may include any information available by October 1 of the year it is submitted, including M4 clerkship grades and evaluations.
Who writes Mspe?
Every medical school writes an MSPE for each graduating student. It is a required part of every residency application. The MSPE has a standardized format which allows us to describe your character as a person, summarize your academic career and highlight your best qualities.
Does ECFMG expedite the processing of supporting documents?
No. ERAS Support Services at ECFMG does not expedite the processing of supporting documents. We process supporting documents within five business days. If there is a discrepancy with your document, you will receive a notification through the MyERAS message center.

The ECFMG Status Report confirms your ECFMG certification status. The ECFMG Status Report contains the month and year that you passed examinations for ECFMG Certification. It does not include your USMLE scores, which can be reported only as part of an official USMLE transcript.*
How was the revised MSPE developed?
After an initial round of research and feedback review, the AAMC MSPE Task Force developed six principles to guide what the revised MSPE should provide. The task force then began a thorough review of survey findings and research, and gathered feedback from program directors, student affairs deans, and other stakeholders.
