Do I need to jack up to replace sway bar links?

If you jack the car up, or put it on jack stands, the wheels will be in full droop and the end-links will have tension on them. If you put the car on jack stands then you need to jack both wheels up to ride height to install/uninstall the end-links. Stock bushings bind so this is necessary.

How tight do sway bar links need to be?

While it generally takes about 14-foot pounds of pressure to tighten the nut down, there is an easy way to ensure you don’t overtighten the bolt that doesn’t require the use of a torque wrench. Tighten the bolt down until you see two threads sticking out from the bottom of the nut after it is installed on the vehicle.

Is a sway bar under tension?

no there isn’t any tension on the sway bar……. No worries, the sway bar isn’t “loaded”. As long as you move the truck up or down evenly on both sides, it will stay unloaded.
